You get the point – rehearsals and pre-production are not only crucial to being able to deliver a top-notch performance, but they are an incredibly important stage in the recording process – if not the most important stage!

Here’s two quick Pro-tips to get you started:

One of the biggest problems encountered in the studio when tracking is that band members are unfamiliar with each others parts -€“ guitarists are hearing the keyboard parts for the first time, or the bassist is trying to understand the drummer’s dynamics. This happens all the time. Loud practice sessions or bad monitoring don’€™t do the band any favours and sometimes it’€™s best to turn things right the way down, so that everyone can focus on the song structure and pay attention in detail to what the other band members are playing.

Decision on the tempos of each song is a very important one to make before stepping into the studio. Last minute tempo decisions often cause disagreements and are a complete waste of time, energy and money when the clock is ticking. If you’€™re already playing the song in a live setting, record it on your phone at the gig and do the same at your practice session. Are they the same? Doubt it! Which sounds better? Some musicians find that they tend to play faster when the dynamics of the song are louder – try figure this out &€“ then plug a metronome or drum machine into the PA that you are all practising through. This will allow for a great consistency between your live gigs, practice sessions and the resulting studio takes when the song is dialled in. Imagine how confident you will all feel at your recording session when you hand your engineer a list of all your songs and their tempo maps!
